LTA KPOP 2 EP 10: Top 10 JTBC Shows

Joongang Tongyang Broadcasting Company (JTBC) is a subscription network and broadcasting company. It was found in 1964 and ran for 16 years before merging with KBS. It wasn't until 2011 when JTBC started broadcasting under Channel number 15.

In today list, I am telling you about my favorite variety shows that have came out from JTBC. There was a lot to choose from but I pick out my favorite one to watch, the ones I kept up with every week and ones I really miss. Let's get started.


1. Knowing Bros

Knowing Bros also known as Men on a Mission or Ask Us Anything is a variety show with a total of 189 episodes as of April 20, 2019. The show starred Kang Ho Dong, Seo Jang Hoon, Kim Young Chul, Lee Soo Geun, Kim Hee Chul of Super Junior, Min Kyung Hoon and Lee Sang Min.

The current format (from episode 17) explores the high school concept where the cast members act as students in a classroom while the guests would come as newly transferred students. Most of the segments for this format portrays activities that every student would do with their classmates. Subsequently, the program would sometimes diversify at the end with a segment outside of the school concept. This format has received praise from the viewers which led to significant increase in ratings and popularity of the program after several episodes have aired.

There are at least two permanent segments which has defined the Brother School format which as entrance application where the guests filled an application form beforehand in which one of the cast members would read and the others would comment. The other is Guess About Me where the guests had prepared several questions related to themselves. Some of the questions are vague or extremely private in which the guests had never revealed to the public. Another format would be the idol groups who have more than five members would cover their name tag and Hee Chul would reveal one fact about the member and the cast members would have to find the real member.

2. Crime Scene

Crime Scene is a variety program with  Hong Jin Ho, Park Ji Yoon, NS Yoon G, Jun Hyun Moo, Lim Bang Geul, and Kang Yong Suk as the cast for the first season. The first season aired on May 10, 2014. Hong Jin Ho and Park Ji Yoon returned for the second season with new members: Jang Jin, Jang Dong Min and Hani of EXID. The third season features returning cast members Park Ji Yoon, Jang Jin along with newcomers: Kim Ji Hoon, Yang Se Hyung and Jung Eun Ji of APINK. The third season ended on July 14, 2017. Through the different season, there are changes. At the start of the game, the players are introduced to the 'Crime Scene', which is a mock-up of a murder scene replicated on a stage area and are tasked with figuring out who the murderer is. After the final criminal vote, the player who receives the most votes is 'arrested' and locked in a makeshift prison, and the players who voted for that person are revealed. If the arrested player is the criminal, everyone who voted for the player receives a bag of gold coins. However, if the arrested player is not eh criminal, the actual criminal wins all of the gold coins that the other players would have won.

3. Hidden Singer

Hidden Singer is a variety music program. The mechanics are a famous singer and several impersonators of the singer. Each person sings one measure of a song behind the blinds for four rounds. In the first rounds, an audience of 100 people vote on the person who they think is not the real singer, the person with the most votes would be eliminated. In the final round, the audience votes on who they think is the real singer, the person with the most votes would win the episode. The program is hosted by Jun Hyun Moo. There is five seasons with a total of 95 episodes including the pilots and special episodes.

4. Please Take Care of My Refrigerator

Please Take Care of My Refrigerator is also known as Chef and My Fridge which is a 2014 cooking variety program starring various chefs and celebrities guests. The show is hosted by Kim Sung Joo and Ahn Jung Hwan with a total of three season and 236 episodes as of July 22, 2019. In each episode, two guests have their refrigerators brought to the filming studio. The hosts go through each refrigerator, with the guests commenting on unusual or otherwise notable foods. The hosts will sometimes 'help' the guests by throwing away ingredients that are expired. The cast members sometimes sample a dish in the refrigerator. Each guest has four of the eight chefs assigned to them and each guest presents two categories of food that he or she would like cooked. Examples of categories include Western style food or a seafood dish that the guest's children would enjoy. Each of the four chefs chooses the category they wish to compete in with two chefs competing in each category. The two competing chefs have fifteen minutes to cook a dish using ingredients from the guest's refrigerator. Some basic ingredients, like onions are provided by the show. A host will then sample the dishes in the middle of the cooking process and comment on their quality. Starting with the chef who finished cooking their dish first, each chef presents their dish to the guest and then to the remaining cast members. After commentary on the dishes, the guest selects the winner.

5. Night Goblin

Night Goblin is a program starring Lee Soo Geun, Jeong Hyeong Don, Park Sung Kwang, Lee Hong Ki, and Kim Jong Hyun of NU'EST. Chun Jung Myung left the show due to schedule conflicts. It is a reality show where in each episode, the cast will attempt to be the first in line to enter various popular places for food or recreation throughout South Korea. The final episode aired on March 18, 2018 with a total of 32 episodes and with one episode that will never aired due to the passing of a guest on the show.

In the earlier episode, the cast and guest(s) gather together around 12am, then proceed to their base camp, which was set up nearby the popular place. The base camp, which was set up such that the group are able to monitor the popular place for any movements. At the base camp, they will be camping overnight and in the next morning, attempt to be the first in line as a team to enter the popular place. Before the star of the overnight camping, the group's hand-phones are confiscated. The reason being, if not, the group can just set alarms on their phones and wake up the in the morning just in time to start to get for first place, which isn't allowed at all. During the overnight camping, a time fairy will appear to help the cast by telling the time and get the cast to play the time fairy's game to get over the overnight camping and elevate the chances of entering in first place. From episode six, the show's production concept was altered (to No Nights 2 Days) so that filming on each location is now split into two episodes, with first half filmed during the day. The first of every two episodes will not involved overnight camping, as the targeted hot place(s) opens either at noon, evening or night. The second will involve the original concept of the program. Team and individual battles will also be introduced. Guest(s) are invited to spend the day and/or night together with the cast. In the latest episodes starting from episode 27, the Night Goblins will take on a team of guests for broadcast airtime. The concept of No Nights 2 Days will still go on. Both teams will have their own hot places to recommend and go by themselves, and depending on the editors of the show, airtime is allocated to each team as they favor.

6. Girl Spirit

Girl Spirit is a reality television singing competition that aims to highlight the talents of vocalists of twelve lesser-known girl groups that debuted in recent years. The contestants are ranked at the end of every episode based on their performances, and their scores will be accumulated over the course of twelve weeks to determine the top four contestants, two from each team. The contestants are given a different theme for every performance. As an 'unstated rule,' contestants may perform a 'pop song' (English language song), as well as have a 'wild card' (featured artist) in a performance only once throughout the competition. Each week select contestants' songs will be released digitally. The winner will receive a brand new car and the rummer-up will get a family vacation to Saipan; both the winner's and the runner-up's final songs will also be released digitally.

There is only one season. The vocalists consisted of Kei of Lovelyz, Min Jae of SONAMOO, Oh Seung Hee of CLC, Hyun Seung Hee of Oh My Girl, Da Won of Cosmic Girls, Sung Yeon of Pristin, Bo Hyung of SPICA, Hye Mi of Fiestar, So Jung of Ladies' Code, Uji of BESTIE, So Yeon of Laboum and Jin Sol of April.

7. Two Yoo Project Sugar Man

Two Yoo Project Sugar Man was original a two episode pilot aired under the name Two Yoo Project Searching For Sugar Man. The regular broadcast of season one is hosted by Yoo Jae Suk, You Hee Yeol, Kim Eana and Sandara Park of 2NE1 that kicked off on October 20, 2015. The second season aired on January 14, 2018 starring Park Na Rae and Joy of Red Velvet along side MCs Yoo Jae Suk and You Hee Yeol.

The idea for the program began with the documentary Searching For Sugar Man, which refers to the 2012 Swedish-British documentary about American musician Sixto Rodriguez, who faded into obscurity in the United States but somehow ended up as a megastar in South Africa. The program revolves around the battle of two teams lea by the MCS. Each team will bring back a 'Sugar Man': the singer who was a one-hit wonder, but has since disappeared from the public eye. The two teams recreated the old song, 'Sugar Song', into new versions which will make them appealing to today's music market. To relive their glory, the songs will be recreated by each producer from each team with today's artist 'Show Man', who are slated to changes every episode.

8. Shinhwa Broadcast

Shinhwa Broadcast is a variety program hosted by the six member boy band Shinhwa: Eric Mun, Lee Min Woo, Kim Dong Wan (up till April 2013), Shin Hye Sung, Jun Jin and Andy Lee (up till November 2013). The weekly program premiered on March 17, 2012 and went on hiatus after the broadcast aired on June 16, 2013. It returned on November 3, 2013 with a new format for season two. As of Decmber 8, 2013, 65 episodes in two season have been broadcast.

This show is part of Shinhwa's comeback to the entertainment industry in March 2012, after a four-year hiatus, during which band members served mandatory military service. The show is also the groups' first exclusive variety program. The show went on hiatus due to Shinhwa members preparing for their 15th Anniversary Concert. It show returned with a new format to go on hiatus again for Shinhwa's Asia tour titled '2013 Shinhwa Grand Tour: The Classic.'

9. Let's Eat Dinner Together

Let's Eat Dinner Together is a documentary-like program that traces the journey of two men who have been called as 'National MCs' (due to their appearances on many entertainment programs) in finding dinner. It is also the first collaboration between the duo since Kang's entry into the entertainment industry. As of July 24, 2019 there has been 136 episodes released.

There are rules that the MCs and guests must followed like press the doorbell only from 6pm (winter) or 6:30pm (summer) to 8pm, do not return a second time to the same house which had rejected them before, do not eat anything given free by citizen on road, do not tell any people before 6pm that will come back later, can insist maximum three times if people refuse, go to another family if any family member is uncomfortable about the shooting, do not enter a family which already had dinner.


10. Idol Room

Idol Room is host by Jeong Hyeong Don and Defconn. It is produced in order to be the idol-specialized program with number one credibility. It was also simulcasted through Naver V Live until episode 41. There is a total of 60 episodes as of July 23, 2019. 

There is three theme song produced by Hui of Pentagon, Soyeon of (G)I-DLE and Lee Seung Hyub of N.Flying.

There are many segments that has been created for this program that changes as time goes by and same idol groups visited. Segments included Nano Dance, Fact Check, The nth Havana Korea Selections, One Column Dance, Today's Pick-dol Close-up Camera, 357 Dance, Attention Dance, NCN Dance, Ending Fairy Selection Bomb Dance, Metal Tray Dance Room and Idol 999 Forced-Audition.
