KPOP OT EP 30: Produce 101 Series vs. Planet Series Part 1: Compare and Contrast

Hello! Welcome to KPOP OT where we talk about everything and anything related to KPOP or the Korean Hallyu Wave.

Hi, this is Linda. How is everyone doing? I hope all is well and all is fine. Just a reminder, you are beautiful and/or handsome and you do not need anyone to justified that.

In today episode, I will be comparing the Produce 101 series and Girls Planet 999 to see the differences and similarities between each show. I am revisiting Girls Planet 999, but before you get mad, I think I should do this before the next season, Boys Planet 2022, starts. We are going back to talk about the Produce 101 series that was popular between 2016 to 2019.

I decided to split it up into three parts so that each episode will not be too long. The first episode is comparing and contrasting between the Produce 101 series and Girls Planet 999. I will also input what I think the produce should do and not do in the next season of Boys Planet 2022. So let's get started.

Before we start off, both series are similar yet different. They are all produce and aired on Mnet although they do not have the same director/producer between the Produce 101 series and Girls Planet 999. I do not know whats going to happen in the next season in Boys Planet 2022 but I would love to predict what might happen or just give my thoughts out, so if they one day come across this post, they might think thats a good idea.

Produce 101 series will be talking about Produce 101, Produce 101 Season 2, Produce 48 and Produce X 101. Planet series will be talking about Girls Planet 999, Boys Planet 2022 and any future seasons that Mnet will do under the name Planet.

Evaluation/Demo Stage

In Produce 101 series, the first three episode are very similar. The trainees enter the studio by their agency. The agency name are release in the studio for all the trainees to see. They are given the choices to pick where they are seated from seat number one to one hundred. The top eleven or twelve chairs are beautiful cushion chairs while the rest are plastic chairs. The first and second episode shows the trainees evaluation stages done by agency/company. After the performances, the trainers ranked them in A, B, C, D, or F class. In Produce X 101, the F class was replaced by X. Then the trainees are taught the theme track's dance in their class. They get another chance to change their evaluation grade by recording and performing their title track in one take. Once they are reevaluated, the trainees move into their new class. The center for the title track is chosen through votes and the filming process starts for the title track. This segment goes into episode three.

In Girls Planet 999, the first episode shows the trainees entering the studio in a trio group with one trainee from each group, K-Group, C-Group and J-Group. The trainees are group together through a keyword. They get to choose where they sit together as a group after they enter the studio. The first and second episode shows their evaluation stages known as the demo stages. Before the evaluation stage started, the girls was already rank by the vocal and dance trainers in each of their respected groups. The center of the title track performance where rank number one by their trainers. The performances were not done in groups by agency but the trainees can mix and match in their respected groups. So K-Group trainees can only work with other trainees from the K-Group. After the performance, the trainers chooses if the girls are consider Planet Top 9 candidates. By the end of the second episode, the trainers choose their Top 9 trainees and from there the Top 9 trainees, they can reshuffle their cells if they choose to or keep it the same.

There are a couple of differences between the two series from the beginning. First, is the fact that the trainees enter differently. In the Produce 101 series, the trainees are label through their agency or by independent trainee, while in the Planet series, the trainees are put into three groups and enter as a cell with two other trainees from the two other group. We don't get any mentions of the trainees label at all. Second, the title track. In the Produce 101 series, the trainees learn the title track after their evaluation stage. We also get to see their reevaluation and the processed of voting/picking their center. In Planet series, the trainees learn the title track before their evaluation stage (known as demo stage on Girls Planet 999). We do not get to see the progress of each trainee learning and the voting. The ranking of the trainees were done by the vocal and dance trainers. Third, identify the trainees skills levels. In Produce 101 series, the trainees were put into different class level based on their evaluation while in Planet series, the trainees were label either Planet Top 9 Candidate or not. If the trainers thought the trainees skills were good enough to be a candidate they were label a candidate were as the other trainees who weren't consider good enough skill-wise was not.

Predictions for Boys Planet 2022:

Based on the information and details that happened in the Produce 101 series and Girls Planet 999, I am here to back some predictions before Boys Planet 2022 began airing.

Final Group: For Boys Planet 2022, I did a little research and found out some important details that I overlook the first time around. In the qualifications area it states "individual trainees who don't belong to a company." DON'T. The key word is DON'T. That means that the trainees will not be labeled by their company. So, this could mean that the group would become an official group not a project group that will disband within a time period of less than 3 to 5 years. If this is true, I think this group would be very successful.

Theme Song: I really like how Girls Planet 999 did it where the trainees learn the theme song before hand and the trainers got to vote and put the trainees in a ranking order. This gives the viewers some anticipation and surprise with where each of the trainees stands compare to the others.

Evaluation Stage/Demo Stage: As much as I hated the A-F classes, I still really like them. You get a sense of where the trainees stand compare to the other trainees. Similar to the ranking of the theme song, at the very least, you can compare them in classes or in groups. I really like the cell idea, where the trainees are put into cells instead of coming out in groups or individually. This connect the trainee together and can really benefit some of them.

First Mission: If the cell does exists, doing something along the same line as Girls Planet 999 would be really good just because you aren't choosing the best trainees out of everyone and every cell group would have a different type of charm and skills. I really like the group vs group in the sense that they performed the same songs so you can compared the two groups together.

Second Mission: This is one of my favorite performances just because you get to see everyone in a new light. Some trainees trying something new like vocal trainees rapping. I really don't have anything different to say about this but I think finding the best song to represent each of the position is very important. I understand selecting songs that are common for a different position is new and give a good chance to try something different but at the same time, we still want to see some good performances.

Third Mission: Another that I can't complain about because its just the concept performances. I would like to see more songs choices and less group members, I feel like that would be a good change to the vibe and different to the past survival shows. I do understand, the less song the less amount they spend.

Fourth Mission: I really like the idea of creating a debut version of the theme track because the viewers get to vote to create an ideal debut team with the trainees. I think that would really help the viewers view or see what the final group may look like.

Final Mission: I really like the two songs for the final group just because the trainees get to performed a full song and not half of a song on stage. The last song for the finale live stage is usually a ballad and I think that is perfect just because we get to see them vocally and enjoy the visual of each trainee.

Elimination Rounds: I really like the voting of the cells because some trainees might get good screen times through the cell while when voting individually, the most popular trainees get more screen time. I like how they switch from voting a certain amount of trainees to just picking only one trainee because this would give us the viewers more thinking on how we really want to pick in the final team.

This is a very long episode but just be glad that I split it up into three episode and not just one because it would be longer. I really wanted to compare the Produce 101 series to Girls Planet 999, and hopefully predict what Boys Planet 2022 might be like. No, thank you very much for staying this long. If you made it to the bottom of this page, comment "YES, I did it!" in the comment section. I will see you in the next episode where we talk about the coincidences that the Produce 101 series didn't break in the four seasons it had.
