KPOP OT EP 11: GOT: Got the Beat

Welcome back to another episode of KPOP OT. In today episode I am going to do something a little bit different for this episode. I wanted to talk about a group and my thoughts on that group. And hopefully we all can share our opinions and thoughts about that group.

In today episode, I want to talk about GOT (Girls on Top): Got the Beat. Because when this group came out, I was excited and super happy but there was a lot of thinking about why they finally decided to do this.

Disclaimer! We are all entitle to our own opinions and thoughts. Please be respectful. All the information I have on the artists are from Wikiepdia.

SM Entertainment announced the launch of the project group Girls On Top and its first sub-unit Got the Beat on December 27, 2021 with Got the Beat focusing on intense dance songs and performances. The group Girls On Top will eventually feature every female artist under SM Entertainment. Each unit will show different combinations by theme. On January 1, 2022, the group performed ‘Step Back’ at SMTOWN Live 2022: SMCU Express @ Kwangya. The group debut single titled ‘Step Back’ was released on January 3, 2022 is a hip hop R&B single composed by Yoo Young Jin and Dem Jointz.

When I first heard about this I thought this was an amazing idea because this would be the equivalent to Super M, another group that contains artists from different groups under SM Entertainment. I was disappointed to know that it was just a project group meaning and I'm thinking that the members would be change out depending on the unit and concept they are going for. That could mean that there would be a lot of sub-units under Girls On Top or that Got the Beat would change members through every release they make. Overall, it's still a good thing because we get to see artists under one company work together. I think that is very rare now in days compare to the past where idols can work together outside of their own company.

I'm now going to talk about each of the members and why I think it was a good choice to have them as members of this project group. The members consisted of Boa, Tae Yeon and Hyo Yeon of Girls' Generation, Seulgi and Wendy of Red Velvet and Karina and Winter of Aespa.

BoA

BoA is a South Korean singer, songwriter, dancer, record producer and actress. She is one of the most successful and influential Korean entertainers and have been dubbed the "Queen of KPOP." At the age of thirteen she released her debut album ID; Peace B in South Korea on August 25, 2000. BoA has released twenty studio albums, including ten in Korean, nine in Japanese, and one in English.

She has appeared as a judge on the reality competition show K-pop Star (2011-2013), as an actress on the television drama Listen to Love (2016), as a host for the second seasons of Produce 101 (2017), as a coach on the third season of The Voice of Korea (2020).

With her ability to sing in Japanese, English and Mandarin, it helped her find commercial success beyond South Korea in Asia. BoA became the first South Korean pop star to break through in Japan. She is the only foreign artists with three albums that have sold more than one million copies in Japan and one of the only three female artists with six consecutive number-one studio albums on the Oricon charts since her debut.

Various artists have cited BoA as an influence and role model such as Girls' Generation's Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, and Seohyun, Shinee's Key, EXO's Sehun, Red Velvet's Irene, I.O.I and soloist Chungha and Billie's Tsuki.

I love the fact that they added BoA. When I saw her name as one of the members, I was really happy and a thought came into my head. I remember her words but I do not remember where she said it. She stated that she wanted to be a part of a girl group and so when I saw her name I was like 'YAY! She finally debuting in a girl group.' It made me so happy for her.

Taeyeon

Taeyeon is a member of the girl group Girls' Generation that debuted on August 5, 2007. Girls' Generation went on to become one of the best-selling artists in South Korea and one of the most popular K-pop groups worldwide. She also participated in other groups including Girls' Generation TTS, Girls' Generation Oh!GG, SM the Ballad and now Got the Beat. In 2015, she debuted as a solo artist.

Taeyeon appeared as a main cast on the reality shows We Got Married (2009), Begin Again (2019) and is currently serving as a main host for Amazing Saturday (2020-present).

Having sold over one million physical albums and twenty million digital singles as of 2021, Taeyeon is one of the best-selling solo artists in South Korea. She has received various awards and nominations, including six Golden Disc Awards, five Seoul Music Awards, three Gaon Chart Music Awards, three Melon Music Awards, and three Mnet Asian Music Awards.

Taeyeon has been cited as an inspiration for numerous K-pop artists. Boy band BTS deemed her as the inspiration for their single 'Boy In Luv' (2014). She has also been named as an influence by Lovelyz' Jiae, Melody Day's Chaehee, Cosmic Girls' Luda, CLC's Elkie, Sonamoo's High.D., Baek A Yeon, Mamamoo's Moonbyul and Heize.

Was I surprised that Taeyeon was in this line up? No! If you do not know, Taeyeon is my ultimate bias and I love her. Vocal QUEEN! Hail to the her! I was excited because that means another chance to see our queen skills and performance again. I honestly feel like she was going to be include no matter what just because she is one of the active members of Girls' Generation musically.

Hyoyeon

Hyoyeon is a South Korean singer, dancer, DJ and television personality. She debuted as a member of the girl group Girls' Generation on August 5, 2007 and part of their sub-unit group Girls' Generation Oh!GG. Girls' Generation went on to become one of the best-selling artists in South Korea and one of South Korea's most popular girl groups worldwide. She also debuted in Younique, a speical dance group as part of a collaboration between SM and Hyundai. In 2016, she debuted as a solo artist.

Hyoyeon appeared as one of the main cast on Invincible Youth (2011), a contestant in Dancing with the Stars (2012), and a coach on Dancing 9 (2013). She also became the first Girls' Generation member to a book.

Hyoyeon is one of the active members of Girls' Generation musically so I was not surprise she was part of this group. I am glad she is part of the group just because we get to see her in another group outside of the Girls' Generation members. She is a talented dancer and rapper.

Seulgi

Seulgi is a South Korean singer and dancer. She is a member of the South Korean girl group Red Velvet and its sub-unit Red Velvet - Irene & Seulgi. Also a member of Got the Beat.

Seulgi is known as an all-rounder artist through her performance and artworks. Brands often cite her positive vibes, creativity, passion for her craft and her unique sensibility and style on why the choose her to represent them - a cultural icon supported by millennial.

In Gallup Korea's Idol Preference poll (before discontinued in 2020), Seulgi ranked as one of the top most popular idols, both in 2018 and 2019.  She had also topped the monthly 'Individual Girl Group Members Power Ranking' published by Korean Corporate Reputation Research Institute a couple of times.

Not another surprise to be part of this group. She is an all-rounder which I love because she can do anything. Her visuals are appealing and she can be a great center too. What can I say when she already been trained for seven years? She

Wendy

Wendy is a South Korean singer, voice actress and radio host. She is a member of the South Korean girl group Red Velvet and made her solo debut in 2021.

She appeared as a host on We Got Married (2015-2016), a panelist on Trick & True (2016-2017), and a host of Mysterious Record Shop (2021).

Wendy has also release multiple soundtrack since 2014 and has work with many other artists like Eric Nam, Zico and John Legend to name a few.

I was surprise that Wendy was a part of this lineup but she is a great vocalist. We all know SM is know for having great vocalists so having her as part of this lineup is not a bad idea. She can sing and dance. She is also a great English speaker also which can help in future activities, if SM does make this group more than a project group only.

Karina

Karina is a South Korea singer, dancer and rapper that debuted in the South Korean girl group Aespa.

Although Aespa just debuted in November 2020, they have reach some success as the rookies of the year, new artists, and artists of the year.

Karina is actually an all-rounder. She can sing, dance and rap but she is also the leader, visual, center and face of the group in Aespa. Not surprise that SM added her into the group because she is a great visual that can bring in a lot of attention but she also good at her part and everything she do.

Winter

Winter is a South Korea singer and dancer that debuted in the South Korean girl group Aespa.

Again, Aespa just debuted in November 2020, they have reach some success as the rookies of the year, new artists, and artists of the year.

I was surprise that they added Winter into this group because they already had other great senior vocalist in the group but again having too much vocalist is not a bad idea at all. Winter does have a unique voice that brings attraction to her and that is one quality I really like about Winter.

Overall, the group contains great dancers because all of them can dance, that for sure is true, but they have Hyoyeon, the dancing queen of Girls' Generation but also in the second generation of K-pop she is known as one of the best dancer too. They also have BoA another great dancer who is also known for her dancing skills. Seulgi is also the main dancer in Red Velvet and many younger idols do look up to her too or have name her as one of the best dancer in the K-pop industry at the moment. Karina is the main dancer of Aespa. Someone to look forward to in dance covers and/or collaborations. Then we have the vocal team. Taeyeon, the main vocalist of Girls' Generation. Many and I repeat many people love her voice and her songs because of her skills. She is one of the most talented and sought out vocalists to collaborate with in the K-pop industry. Wendy, the main vocalist of Red Velvet. Her voice is unique and you can't find that anywhere. Another unique vocalists is Winter, you can tell her voice when she hits a certain note. I remember listening to the song and when the note was hit, I was like that is Winter. Another great vocalist is BoA. She is the queen of K-pop. How can she not be a good vocalists at all? She also have a unique sound that many people love. Now, rapping! BoA can rap, what can't she do? But there are other great rappers in the group too. Hyoyeon is one of the rappers from Girls' Generation and she have gotten a lot better since her debut. Karina is one of the rapper from Aespa and she can rap. Most of her lines in Aespa's songs are rapping. Then we have the rest of the girls: Taeyeon, Wendy, Seulgi, and Winter who can rap but isn't known for rapping at all. If you watch some of the covers, you will be surprise.

The song itself is catchy but most important I love everything from the vocals to the rap and the dance. Again, all the members in this group are the strongest at their skills coming together to create a super insane girl group. They are at the top of their skills. You can't go wrong here at all.

That is it for today episode of KPOP OT. Tell me your thoughts about Got the Beat and their song 'Step Back.' Did you listen to it? Did you like the song? Let me know what you think. I'll see you in another episode of KPOP OT.
