KPOP OT EP 17: Top 10 KPOP Girl Group Maknae

Welcome back to another episode of KPOP OT where we talk about everything and anything about KPOP or the Korean Hallyu Wave.

In today episode, I will be talking about my favorite girl group maknae. Maknae is the youngest member. Although there is a maknae line, referring  to the youngest members in the team, only one member hold the title to this position. The member must be the youngest member out of all the members in the group for her to hold this position.

10. Apink Ha Young

Ha Young is the maknae, rapper and vocalist in APINK.

APINK debuted on April 19, 2011 under Plan A Entertainment (formerly known as A Cube Entertainment) with the song title 'I Don't Know.' Plan A merge with Fave Entertainment and change their name to Play M Entertainment. Play M and Cre.ker Entertainment merge into IST Entertainment in November 2021. The group was originally a seven member group before Yookyung left the group in 2013 to focus on her studies. 

Ha Young trained for one and a half years before her debut in APINK. Many people do not believe she is the youngest member due to her mature physical appearances. Standing at 169cm (5'6), she is the tallest member in the group. 

She made her solo debut on August 21, 2019 with the song title 'Oh' and 'Don't Make Me Laugh.' She is the second member in the group, after fellow member Eunji, to make a solo debut. She made her acting debut in a web-drama Please Find Her in March 2017. 

9. Gugudan Mina

Mina is the maknae, main rapper, main dancer and vocalist in Gugudan. 

Gugudan debuted on June 28, 2016 under Jellyfish Entertainment with the song title 'Wonderland.' They were originally a nine member group before their originally maknae left the group to focus on her health and education on October 25, 2018. The group disbanded on December 31, 2020 after two years of hiatus. 

Mina was not the original maknae in the group until Hyeyeon left the group. She trained for one year and one month before her debut. 

She participated in Mnet's survival show Produce 101 and ranked 9th on the show. She made her debuted with I.O.I on May 4, 2016 with the song title 'Dream Girls.' The group disbanded on January 29, 2017. She made her acting debut on the series Tale of the Gyeryeong Fairy in 2018. She have the same exact birthday (day, month, and year) as fellow I.O.I, now Weki Meki member Do Yeon. 

8. Cherry Bullet May

May is the maknae, lead dancer, vocalist and visual in Cherry Bullet. 

Cherry Bullet debuted on January 21, 2019 under FNC Entertainment with the song title 'Q&A.' The group was originally a ten member group until December 13, 2019, when FNC announced that decided to terminated three of the members, Mirae, Lin Lin and Kokoro, exclusive contract due to personal reasons. 

May trained for seven months before making her debut in Cherry Bullet. She is the tallest member in the group and have the nickname Giant Baby. Despite being the tallest member in the group, she is the least flexible member too.

She participated in Mnet's survival show Girls Planet 999 as a Japanese trainee. May was in the same cell as Choi Yu Jin and Cai Bing, ranking cell number one in the first ranking. She ranked J8 (8th of all Japanese trainees) or P23 (23 out of all trainees) and was eliminated before the finale. 

7. Blackpink Lisa

Lisa is the maknae, main dancer, lead rapper, sub vocalist in Blackpink. 

Blackpink debuted on August 8, 2016 under YG Entertainment with the song title 'Boombayah.' They are a four member group with no leader. 

Lisa trained for five years and three months. She was the only person to join YG in the YG Audition Thailand 2010. She joined the company as their first non-Korean trainee on April 11, 2011. Standing at 166.5cm (5'5.6), she is the second tallest member in the group. 

She made her solo debut on September 10, 2021 with the song 'Lalisa.' She is the first non-Korean artist under YG Entertainment. Lisa and GOT7's BamBam are childhood friends and were part of the same dance crew, We Zaa Cool. Lisa ranked 9th on TC Candles "The 100 Most Beautiful Faces of 2018", 3rd in 2019, 2nd in 2020 and 1st in 2021. She was an only child raised by her Thai mother and Swiss stepfather. 

6. Mamamoo Hwasa

Hwasa is the maknae, vocalist and rapper in Mamamoo. 

Mamamoo debuted on June 18, 2014 under RBW Entertainment (Rainbow Bridge World, formerly known as  WA Entertainment) with the song title 'Mr. Ambiguous.' They are a four member group. 

Hwasa trained for three years before her debut. She is not one of the tallest member in the group although all the members are only one inches taller than one another. 

She had her solo debut on February 13, 2019 with the song 'TWIT.' She was named Rookie Female of the Year in Variety in 2018 and won a MBC Entertainment Award for her work on I Live Alone. She used to recored guide vocals for 4Minute. She appeared on Korea Power Celebrity 40 list placing 26th in 2019 and was feature by Forbes in their 30 Under 30 Asia list of 2021. 

5. Aespa Ning Ning

Ning Ning is the maknae and main vocalist in Aespa.

Aespa debuted on November 17, 2020 under SM Entertainment with the song title 'Black Mamba.' They are a four member group. 

Ning Ning trained for four to five years before her debut. She is the longest trained member in the group despite being the youngest member. She is one of the shortest member alongside fellow member Winter. She became a trainee in 2016 and was introduce as a SM Rookies on September 19, 2016. She is the last member of SM Rookies to graduate and debut from SM Rookies. She is the only female trainee to debut after Red Velvet from SM Rookies. 

She was a member of "Let's Sing Kids" in China. She also participated in China Got Talent Season 2. She participated in MBC's Shining Star that aired on October 16, 2017. She ranked 38th in TC Candler "Top 100 Most Beautiful Faces of 2021" and 43rd in 2020. She is the first Chinese main vocalist in a Kpop girl group. 

4. Kep1er Ye Seo

Yeseo is the maknae of Kep1er. There is no official position release from the company as of January 26, 2022. 

Kep1er debuted on January 3, 2022 under WAKE ONE Entertainment and Swing Entertainment with the song title 'WA DA DA.' They are a nine member group formed after Mnet's survival show Girls Planet 999. 

Yeseo is one of the shortest member in the group. Her actual trainee period time is unknown as she been active in many groups before debuting in Kep1er. In 2014, she was a pre-debut member but never debuted in Pritti. At the age of 5, she debuted in 2010 with the group CutieL and left the group in 2013. She joined Busters on February 1, 2019 and left the group in August 6, 2020. 

She ranked 6th place on Girls Planet 999. She is most known for her role in the film Miracle In Cell No. 7 (2013) as the Sailor Moon backpack girl. She is the longest active senior member in the group. 

3. f(x) Krystal

Krystal is the maknae, lead vocalist, visual, and face of the group in f(x).

f(x) debuted on September 5, 2009 under SM Entertainment with the song title 'La Cha Ta.' They were originally a five member group until member Sulli left the group in August 2015 to focus on acting. On October 14, 2019, former member Sulli passed away from suicide. The group have not disband yet although all the members have left SM Entertainment. Her contract with SM Entertainment ended in August 2020 and she signed with H& Entertainment in October 2020. 

Krystal was recruited by SM Entertainment in 2000 to join the company with her sister, Jessica but her parents didn't allow her to join until 2006. She did appear in television commercials in 2002. She trained for three years before debuting in f(x). 

She made her acting debut in the TV series More Charming By Day in 2010. 

2. WJSN Yeon Jung

Yeon Jung is the maknae and main vocalist in WJSN.

WJSN (also known as Cosmic Girls) debuted on February 25, 2016 under Starship Entertainment and Yuehua Entertainment with the song title 'Mo Mo Mo.' They were originally a twelve member group before Yeonjung was added on August 17, 2016, now a thirteen member girl group. 

Yeon Jung trained for one year and three months before her debut. She is a former SM Entertainment trainee. 

Yeon Jung participated on Mnet's survival show Produce 101 and ranked 11th making her one of the finalist on the show. She debuted with I.O.I on May 4, 2016. They disbanded in January 2017. She debuted in WJSN while still a member in the project group I.O.I. She participated in TvN's vocal reality survival show in 2019 and placed 1st among the twelve idols that citizens voted to appear on the show. 

1. SNSD Seo Hyun

Seo Hyun is the maknae and lead vocalist in SNSD.

SNSD debuted on August 5, 2007 under SM Entertainment with the song title 'Into The New World.' The group was originally a nine member group until Jessica left in September 2014. 

Seohyun is the second tallest member in the group after Sooyoung. She was cast in 2003 SM Casting System and trained for six years and six months before her debut. 

She is classed as the second best vocalist in the group by a professional vocal instructor and the third best vocalist in the group by SM Entertainment. 

She made her solo debut on January 17, 2017 with the song 'Don't Say No.' She left SM Entertainment after her contract ended in October 2017. She is currently under Namoo Actors as a solo artist and actress.
