KPOP OT EP 18: Top 10 KPOP Boy Group Maknae

Welcome back to another episode of KPOP OT where we talk about everything and anything related to KPOP or Korean Hallyu Wave. This is Linda. How is everyone doing? I hope everyone is having a wonderful day today. 

In today episode we are talking about my favorite boy group maknaes. In the last episode, I talk about my favorite girl group maknaes. Maknae is the youngest member. Although there is a maknae line, referring  to the youngest members in the team, only one member hold the title to this position. The member must be the youngest member out of all the members in the group for him to hold this position.

10.  Golden Child Bomin

Bomin is the maknae, lead dancer, vocalist, visual and face of the group in Golden Child.

Golden Child debuted on August 28, 2017 under Woollim Entertainment with the song title 'DamDaDi.' They were originally an eleven member group until January 6, 2018, when Jaeseok left the group due to health issues. They are currently a ten member group.

Bomin became a Woollim trainee on August 28, 2015 and trained for exactly two years before his debut. He is the second tallest member in the group after fellow member Daeyeol. 

He made his acting debut in a lead role in A-TEEN 2 in 2019. On July 2019, he became a new MC for MBC Music Bank alongside fellow actress A-TEEN Shin Ye Eun. They both left their position as MC on July 17, 2020. He is the luckiest member in the group. He was a model for the huggies when he was a baby. 

9. NU'EST Ren

Ren is the maknae and sub vocalist in NU'EST. 

NU'EST debuted on March 15, 2012 under Pledis Entertainment with the song title 'Face.' They are a five member group. While fellow member Minhyun promote with Wanna One, the four member promoted as the sub-unit group NU'EST W, W for waiting for Minhyun.

Ren was part of Pledis Boys, a trainee group under Pledis Entertainment. He trained for about two years before his debut. He is the second male trainee to join Pledis Entertainment after fellow member JR. Although four of the members in the group were all born in 1995, except for oldest member Aron, Ren is the youngest out of all five members. 

He participated in Mnet's survival show Produce 101 Season 2 and ranked 20nd. He got the nickname Shoulder Gangster on the show. During his earlier days, he was known for his long hair and feminine features. He is the mood maker in the group. 

8. NCT Jisung

Jisung is the maknae, dancer, vocalist and rapper in NCT. 

NCT is an acronym for Neo Culture Technology and described as having unlimited number of members. The group is under SM Entertainment and promotes in subunits and in each units, the member can change depending on the release. The first group to promote NCT is NCT U that debuted on April 9, 2016 with the song title 'The 7th Sense.' NCT U does not have fixed members. The second group is NCT 127 and they debuted on July 7, 2016 with the song title 'Fire Truck.' The group has ten members. The third group is NCT Dream and they debuted on August 25, 2016 with the song title 'Chewing Gum.' This group consisted of the younger members of NCT and has seven members. WayV is the fourth unit to debut on January 17, 2019 with the song title 'Regular.' WayV is a sub-unit based out of Korea, promoting in China. The whole entire group consisted of twenty-three members as of April 2021.

Jisung spent three to four years training before debuting in NCT. He may not be the youngest member in each of the NCT subunit groups but he is the youngest member out of all twenty-three members.

7. WINNER Seungyoon

Seungyoon is the maknae, leader and main vocalist in WINNER.

WINNER debuted on August 17, 2014 under YG Entertainment with the song title 'Empty.' They were originally a five member group until November 26, 2016 when Taehyun left the group to mental health issues. 

Seungyoon gained the maknae position after fellow member Taehyun left the group in November 2016. He trained for three years debut with the group. 

He participated in Superstar K2 in 2010 where he place 4th place. He won the rookie of the year for Gaon Chart Award in 2010. He made his acting debut in High Kick! 3 in 2011. On July 13, 2013 he made his solo debut under YG Entertainment with the song 'It Rains.' He made his solo debut before debuting in the group. In May 2020, Seungyoon participated in MBC King of Masked Singer where he won the title of King Masked Singer. He held the title of the youngest king and the first and only YG artist to win on the show King of Masked Singer

6. SF9 Chani

Chani is the maknae, main dancer, sub rapper, sub vocalist and face of the group in SF9.

SF9 debuted on October 5, 2016 under FNC Entertainment with the song title 'Fanfare.' They are a nine member group. The group participated in a survival show d.o.b. (dance or band) against NEOZ Band (later debuted as Honeyst). 

Chani is a former Fantagio trainee and was trained for seven years before his debut. He was part of the pre-debut team under FNC Entertainment called Neoz School as a member of the first group called NEOZ. He is one of the shortest member in the group. 

He appeared a mini Yoochun of TVXQ in TVXQ's music video 'Balloons.' He is childhood friends with Astro's Moonbin and iKON's Chanwoo. He is well known for his role, Woo Joo, in Sky Castle that aired in 2018 to 2019 and Signal in 2016. He made his acting debut as a child actor in Queen Seondeok in 2009. 

5. EXO Sehun

Sehun is the maknae, lead rapper, lead dancer and visual in EXO.

EXO debuted on April 8, 2018 under SM Entertainment with the song title 'Mama.' They were originally a twelve member group until May 15, 2014 when member Kris filed a lawsuit asking for termination of his contract and left EXO. On October 10, 2014, member Luhan filed a lawsuit asking for termination of his contract and left EXO. Later on August 24, 2015, Tao filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment which he lost on April 28, 2017. They are currently a nine member group.

Sehun became a trainee in 2008 and trained for four years before his debut. He was scouted on the streets at the age of 12. He was the fifth member to be introduce to the public.

He ranked 15th in TC Chandler "The 100 Top Most Handsome Faces in 2018." The is a regular casted on Netflix variety show 'Busted.' He made his acting debut in To The Beautiful You in 2012 with a cameo appearance in episode two. 

4. Super Junior Kyuhyun

Kyuhyun is the maknae and main vocalist in Super Junior. 

Super Junior debuted on November 6, 2005 under SM Entertainment with the song title 'Twins (Knock Out).' They originally debuted as a twelve member group before adding in their thirteen member on May 27, 2006. Currently, they are a ten member group with one inactive member. 

Kyuhyun was not the originally maknae of Super Junior. It was fellow member Ryeowook until Kyuhyun joined the group in May 2006. He only spent three months training before joining the group. He is known as the Evil Maknae because of his sharp tongue while playing the Of Course game. It is consider his strongest weapon.

He competed on a singing competition called Buddy Star Contest and won 3rd place. He made his solo debut on November 13, 2014 with the song 'At Gwanghwamun.' On April 19, 2007, he was in a car accident with members Leeteuk, Shindong, Eunhyuk, and their managers. 

3. SHINEE Taemin

Taemin is the maknae, main dancer and sub vocalist in SHINEE.

SHINEE debuted on May 25, 2008 under SM Entertainment with the song title 'Replay (Noona, You're Pretty).' They were a five member group until fellow member Jonghyun passed on December 18, 2017. They are currently a four member group still under SM Entertainment. 

Taemin joined the company through SM Open Weekend Audition Casting in 2005 and trained for three years before his debut. He is well-known for his dancing skills. He is currently inactive as of January 27, 2021 due to military service.

He made his solo debut on August 18, 2014 with the song 'Danger.' He was a mentor on KBS The Unit and he is also part of the SM Entertainment super group SUPERM that debuted on October 4, 2019. Although he is not their maknae in the group, he is their main dancer, main vocalist and center.

2. GOT7 Yugyeom

Yugyeom is the maknae, main dancer and sub vocalist in GOT7. 

GOT7 debuted on January 16, 2014 under JYP Entertainment with the title track 'Girls Girls Girls.' They are a seven member group. The members left JYP Entertainment after their contract ended on January 19, 2021. They signed with Warner Music Korea and release their 1st single on February 20, 2021 after leaving JYP Entertainment. 

Yugyeom became a trainee in the late 2010/early 2011. He trained for about four years before his debut in GOT7. He is the youngest and the tallest member in the group. Many people confuse him for being the oldest member in the group because of his height and his mature appearance.

He won first place against other idols on the celebrity dance show Hit The Stage. He made his solo debut on June 11, 2021. He is currently under AOMG Entertainment. In 2010, he won second place at the national competition Adrenaline House Dance Battle.

1. BTOB Sungjae

Sungjae is the maknae, vocalist and face of the group in BTOB.

BTOB debuted on March 21, 2012 under Cube Entertainment with the song title 'Insane.' The group was originally a seven member group until fellow member Ilhoon left the group on December 31, 2020 to investigation by the police for marijuana usage. 

Sungjae trained for two years before making his debut in BTOB. He audition for JYP but was drop at the final round of JYP Open Audition. He was BTOB temporary leader while fellow member and leader of BTOB was doing his military service. 

He made his acting debut in 2013 with the drama Monstar. He made his solo debut on March 2, 2020. Sungjae is well known for acting in School 2015: Who Are You? and Goblin. He enlisted into the military on May 11, 2020 and was release on November 14, 2021.
